Reading & Writing Tutoring
The Best Reading and Spelling System
The Barton System
Individuals with dyslexia encounter difficulties in accurately and swiftly being able to read despite having had phonics instruction. They tend to read slowly and inaccurately, failing to meet oral reading fluency benchmarks. Additionally, they always have difficulty with spelling, particularly in writing sentences, stories, and compositions.
Backed by the latest scientific, independent research for effective dyslexia-specific programs, the main instruction for tutoring will be provided by an Orton-Gillingham-based program: The Barton Reading & Spelling System, which was designed and created for individuals of all ages who either have dyslexia or are suspected of having it.
The Barton System delivers direct, explicit, and multi-sensory instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, reading and fluency, spelling, spelling rules, and punctuation with rigorous practice. With this system, a variety of engaging games and materials will further help reinforce what the student has learned.
The Scope and Sequence of the Barton System :
The Barton System consists of 10 levels, gradually increasing in complexity to build on the foundations of reading, writing, and spelling:
Phonemic Awareness
Consonants and Short Vowels
Closed and Unit Syllables
Multi-Syllable Words and Vowel Teams
Prefixes and Suffixes
Six Reasons for Silent E
Vowel R’s
Advanced Vowel Teams
Influences of Foreign Languages
Latin Roots and Greek Combining Form
Based on individual differences and needs, other Orton-Gillingham programs may be used from time to time where appropriate.
For children who are not yet prepared for dyslexia tutoring, a pre-Barton program is offered to provide them with the fundamental skills in letter sounds.
Scheduling & Timeline
Closing the reading gap typically requires 2-hours of weekly instruction and usually takes 1 to 3 years to bring a student up to grade-level reading.
