Grow and learn with confidence
Meet Heidi
Hello, I am Heidi Drake, the professional behind Drake Dyslexia Tutoring Services for reading, writing, and spelling. As a mother of three dyslexic children and as a devoted foreign language teacher, I always had that student who struggled to learn the conventional way. Witnessing their learning challenges, I was determined to find avenues so they could succeed academically, especially in reading and writing. This motivated me to embark on a personal research journey to understand their needs better and find effective ways to support their unique learning styles.
My story…
In my quest for solutions, I came across the Orton-Gillingham method for dyslexia. Delving into this approach, I absorbed all available knowledge and diligently applied its principles with my children. The results were transformative. My daughter, who initially could barely read and write by fifth grade, defied expectations by graduating with honors in English Literature from college and eventually earning her Master’s Degree from Harvard University with the highest honors. My sons also were able to excel academically and became excellent readers and writers.
However, my journey didn’t end there. A friend’s son, grappling with low self-esteem and academic anxiety due to dyslexia, prompted me to explore further. At this time, I discovered the Barton Reading & Spelling System and introduced this young man to the method. When he first joined my program in fifth grade, he was still reading at a third-grade level. Despite being well into his academic journey, the disparity between his reading abilities and grade level was stark. Using the Barton System with him proved to be a game changer; he was reading at grade level in just four months of its implementation. With patience and dedication from teachers, parents, and students, and the structured approach offered by the Barton method, I began to witness remarkable progress. He graduated from high school with honors, seamlessly transitioned to college, and has flourished outside the academic world.
A journey towards excellence…
Since then, I’ve encountered countless students who found themselves at rock bottom academically and emotionally, their confidence shaken by the challenges of dyslexia, which was often combined with ADHD. Some students could not even continue in school since they could not learn to read and correctly sound out three-letter words. Each of them had a unique journey; some raced through the program, while others required up to four years to navigate the complexities they faced with reading and spelling. Despite the varying timelines, the common thread among them was the perseverance and determination to overcome obstacles. I varied my lessons with hard work, laughter, and games, encouraging them to keep going. Many of my students pursued higher education and emerged as exemplary scholars. Witnessing their transformation from struggling learners to confident achievers has deepened my commitment to supporting individuals with dyslexia and similar challenges. It’s a passion that extends beyond academics; it’s about empowering these young people to thrive in school and life.
